My boom / ridge tent is finally at proof of concept stage (in my garage - with a wooden pole standing in for the mast as I don't have room to raise the mast in there)!
I bought a lightweight camping tarp last season to use for this, but never really got around to it. I have finally got round to fitting it on properly and it seems a good fit - head and shoulder room is obviously limited so I think I would be living on the floor of the boat in order to get some more headroom.
It is very light (but hopefully strong!) spinnaker material so it packs up very small. A little more fine tuning and I should be able to set it up outside so I can take some photos (my lens isn't wide angle enough to take them in the garage!).
I think the best sleeping option is going to be some slats which raise a platform an inch or two off the floor - sleeping with feet under the thwart and head toward the stern where there is more shoulder space. That is the next stage in the plan... determined to sleep aboard next season at least one night!
Anyone else tried any other solutions they can give feedback on?
Cheers
Jon

Hello Jon.
I've been thinking all year about the best way to get a tent that is light and easily put up. So I bought a set of the spare fibreglass poles you can get from any camping shop to repair tents. They are lightweight, bendy and pack down into a small space. Having recently replaced my rowlocks and sockets with some alloy ones, I thought I'd put four of the poles together, bent them so that they cleared the boom, then planted the ends into the sockets and was amazed to see that they stood on their own.
This way of doing it would give a lot more head and shoulder room than just the ridge I think. I guess the final effect will look like one of those covered tunnels you see in garden centres.
As it was a windy evening I decided to leave them and see what happened overnight... They were still in position the next morning! Now all I have to do is get some means of supporting another set at the transom, (without drilling holes in the side decks) and doing a similar thing at the mast. Velcro around the mast maybe, to close the forward end off?
I'll take some pics of the pole in position when I bring the Gull home this weekend if you're interested? I'd like to see the set-up you have if that's OK?
Thanks
George

Hi George
That sounds like it may be a good plan - certainly should give more living space. Do you know how long the poles are?
Have got a photo of mine now - will try and post it tomorrow.
Cheers
Jon

Hi John and thanks for the reply. Sorry I haven't been on lately - life intrudes - so I didn't get down to bring the boat home. As soon as I do, I'll measure the poles and get a picture to you.
All the best

Picture of the boat tent should be below. Only a very rough mockup as I am waiting for some better weather to get outside and try it with the mast up!

Hello Jon, back again. I brought my Gull home a couple of weeks ago and still haven't had time to set up the poles to show you. At the moment, she's parked on my front garden with a tarp over (luckily) as there's also a foot of snow on top of that...
Once that's cleared, I'm hoping to move it into the back garden and set up the mast, boom and the poles, so that I can take some shots of the rigging and the prototype hoop arrangement for the boom tent. As soon as I do I'll try to post some pictures or email them to you. Yours looks to be a pretty good one for cover doesn't it? I look forward to seeing the next stage! G |

My tip is try sail slugs instead of poles. Designing poles is very attractive but putting tent up and storage is easier without them. PS Ive just remembered my Gulls only have single tracks on the boom but the same pole free result can be had by using shockcord loops round each end of boom |

Hi Jon I've taken a couple of shots of the poles in position on the Gull when we had a brief break in the weather. I have no idea how to upload these in a message - can you help? Alternatively, let me have your email address and I'll forward them to you. Regards George
