Bedford Basin Yacht Club was established in 1953 at the head of the Bedford Basin in Bedford. At the time it was a cottage community on the outskirts of Halifax. The cold fog that often envelopes Halifax Harbour seldom makes its way all the way up the Basin hence, the location has earned the nick names as Sunnyside and Summer Cove.
BBYC is a family and community oriented yacht club with an emphasis on sailing, racing and sail training programs for juniors and adults. Cruising coastal for power and sail, daysailing and a variety of events that make up a year-round social calendar place BBYC at the forefront of this vibrant community. Yacht Racing: Bedford Basin Yacht Club hosts annual regattas and championships, weekly club racing and other special events, and is home to some of the largest one design fleets of J24's and Niagara 26's in Atlantic Canada. All events are open to on-line registration available on this site. Highlights of the 2010 season include an opening Regatta, Tuesday Night One Design Series, Wednesday Night Racing Series, Thursday Night Women's Racing Series, the NS Women's Keelboat Championship, a Labour Day Weekend Regatta as well as various other races and regattas throughout the season.
Learn To Sail: Sailing at BBYC emphasizes safety, good sportsmanship, friendships, skills on and off the water, and most of all fun! Courses are taught by Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) certified instructors. CYA is the national sport organization for sailing in Canada. They provide us with the technical resources, materials and national standards from which we design and deliver our Learn to Sail Programs.
