Bristol Sailing Clubs
Bristol Avon Sailing Club was founded in 1955 by a band of local sailors keen to make use of the River Avon on their doorstep for the then rapidly expanding sport of dinghy sailing.
A club dedicated to racing sailing dinghies for enjoyment. Small-scale, friendly and competitive. We offer good facilities, and helpful advice to intermediates and those new to dinghy racing. All in the heart of the Historic City of Bristol. We sail a handicap fleet, to Portsmouth Number. Classes currently on the water are: Laser, Firefly, Comet, Scorpion, Laser Radial, Mirror, Topper, Enterprise, Solo, Lark, OK, Wanderer, Finn and Supernova You don”t need your own boat to race – The Club owns four Toppers (and are preparing a Laser and a Wanderer) that are available (for members only) for a nominal donation.
Bristol Avon Sailing Club was founded in 1955 by a band of local sailors keen to make use of the River Avon on their doorstep for the then rapidly expanding sport of dinghy sailing. Several club-owned training boats are available for occasional loan to new club members to help them get into the swing of things. These boats – Toppers and Comets – enable beginners to get on the water prior to taking a decision on which of the many different types and classes of boat would suit them best to buy.
We offer a full range of dinghy sailing, from to instruction for complete beginners to top-class racing . Most of all we offer a friendly welcome to sailors of all ages and stages. The club began in 1955 at Sugar Loaf Beach in Portishead to promote the sport of sailing on the Bristol Channel. More than 50 years on we have grown from humble beginnings to one of the leading coastal sailing clubs in the South West.
We are proud of our National Champions and World Championship competitors. However we are also able to offer sailing to everybody regardless of their ability. Some years ago we entered into partnership with Training Saints, a watersports tuition company, to become a RYA Accredited Training Centre. This means we are can offer formal sailing qualifications, from complete beginner upwards, together with instruction in windsurfing, powerboating and personal watercraft. We also have a Cadet section for young people.
